The Foundations of Wellbeing: What We Often Overlook

When people think about improving their wellbeing, they often search for something radical. A completely new routine, new supplement, new programme, a course of treatment or a complete lifestyle change. But over the years, what I’ve come to understand is that the foundations of wellbeing are often much simpler than we think.

In my work, I always encourage people to begin by looking at the basics first. This includes the quality of your sleep, hydration, movement and the way you breathe; they all have a profound effect on how the body and mind function.

I can’t emphasise enough how sleep is one of the most important parts of our wellbeing because it’s the time when the body regenerates and restores itself. Without proper rest, the nervous system remains under pressure and over time this begins to affect us physically, mentally and emotionally.

Movement and breathing are equally as important. I often encourage gentle stretching in the morning because the body becomes still for many hours during sleep, and a simple movement helps restore circulation and awareness within the body, allowing the system to wake up more naturally. At the same time, the way we breathe has a direct impact not only on our circulatory and respiratory system, but also on the nervous system, influencing how calm, balanced and connected we feel throughout the day.

The connection between wellbeing and our work

What I have noticed in my many years of working with people, clients and therapists included, is that when these foundations are neglected, we often feel disconnected from ourselves without fully understanding why. This is especially important for us, therapists, as we spend so much time supporting others that it can become easy to overlook our own wellbeing in the process. But the quality of the space we create for clients is always connected to the state we are in ourselves.

When we’re exhausted, overstimulated or disconnected, the body communicates this, even without words. Our presence and our focus changes, and as a result the treatment feels different for the client. This is why daily rituals matter so much to me! These small consistent practices create stability within the body and mind. They help us stay connected, grounded and more present both in our work and in everyday life.

Supporting yourself consistently

This is also something I bring into the Beata Digital Academy. Alongside the Face Massage and Back and Body Massage courses, the subscriber area of the app includes daily rituals, stretches, and meditations designed specifically to support therapists not only professionally, but personally as well. The videos within the app are designed to support the challenges therapists face every day in their profession, bringing together the knowledge I’ve gained through years of teaching, alongside my own experience. If self-care is something you would like to explore more deeply, you can also find further articles and resources within our Therapist Wellbeing section.

When creating my educational platform, I found all these rituals and advises a critical foundation of the app because true wellbeing is rarely created through one single action. It’s built through the small things we return to consistently, and the way we choose to care for ourselves every day.
